Adam, great thoughts. A community you might want to look into is the Enterprise Design/Architecture community. My small intersection to this group is through a conference and book of the same name, Intersection. I had the pleasure of speaking at it last year and really enjoyed having my worlds colliding and expanding at this event. I think what you are calling Business Design, they call Enterprise Design. Companies like frog and mad*pow are doing work in the areas of org design and many others are looking at service design as taking on similar scope to what you are looking at as well. That framing has been really interesting for my own DesignOps work.
